Excerpt from RUN THE RISK by NY Times Bestselling Author Lori Foster
"He disappeared off the balcony and she just knew he was
coming inside to corral her in the narrow hallway.
Why
wouldn’t he leave her alone?
The
apartment building was…unpleasant. Peeling paint from the walls, mold in the
corners, carpet with stains she didn’t want to investigate too closely…
She
knew why she was there.
Why
was he?"
Question & Answers with Lori Foster
1. Is there a
message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
You know, even if you try NOT to leave a message, there
always is. Parts of our personalities come through. My characters always love
animals, because I think that’s important. I wouldn’t trust someone who didn’t
like animals. And kids always come first, because they *should.* Families are
not always blood related; I have a sister, a stepsister, and a half-brother –
but they’re my siblings through and through. My stepdad *was* my dad, no “step”
to it. So for me, it’s about who you love, who is in your life, more than any
actual blood relationship.
2. How much of
the book is realistic?
I suppose the characters have to be “real” or readers
wouldn’t relate to them. The emotions of falling in love are real. How the
characters react to it, and how they survive past and present hurts, are I hope
realistic. But nothing about this story is based on fact, either to actual
people or situations.
3. Are
experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
Not in this book, no. But I have incorporated my own
emotions in other books, just as I assume all authors do. What we think and
feel, how we react, the truth of our lives, it seeps into the writing
sometimes. Overall, my life has been blessed, but boring. No great adventures
or danger. I married young, have stayed married to the same amazing man (34
years now!) and we’ve raised healthy sons. Nothing book-worthy about any of
that. But I have to say, it’s awfully nice. J
4. What books
have most influenced your life?
While I love reading, books are entertainment for me. I read
for enjoyment, not enlightenment. I’ve very, very based in reality, so I don’t
get fiction confused with real life. Besides, real life has been pretty
amazing. A challenge on occasion, sure. No one skates by without a few bumps in
the road. But I found my “happily ever after” on the 3rd day of my sophomore
year of high school – aka met my hubby that day – and we’ve been on the same
page ever since, no pun intended.
