What’s wicked about romances?
***
For this blog hop hosted by Nat from Reading Romances she is
asking bloggers, authors and reader, what wicked about romances?
First, awesome question!!
This question really had me straining my brain. You see, every genre, whether it is
historical, paranormal, contemporary or even sci/fi has a complete unique reason
to why it makes it wicked. Let’s ponder
this for a moment.
I am a character driven reviewer. Here are my criteria what is
wicked about romances. I’m starting with the hero, himself. Holler, if you feeling me. =)
For me, I desire my heroes to be that is inflicted with so emotional
much pain about the choices he’s made or will be making, this is a major draw
for me.
Take for instance, award-winning author Anne Gracie’s 2008
Berkley Sensations Historical Romance HIS CAPTIVE BRIDE, the second installment
in her phenomenal Regency series; The Devil Rider’s.
Gracie’s hero, Harry Morant has returned home from the war
with a dream in his heart of breeding the finest racing horses in England .
When readers are first introduced to Harry
we are instantly drawn to his tough exterior.
For we know, as readers, that the tougher the nut the harder it is to
crack. You see Harry was born on the
wrong side of the blanket and has lived with the stigma of being the Earl’s
bastard. In his youth he fell in love
for a blue eyed belle who crushed his belief in love. Now, Harry along has set him self on a
private mission. He never believed that
one stubborn dark haired woman would make him feel let alone believe in
love. For Harry, love had no meaning, no
purpose and led people down a path that a more logical person would never dare
travel. Gracie shows her readers the
depth of Harry’s pain by intricately lacing the past and present so flawlessly
that I felt his deep abiding hurt. Hurt
at how people, the tone, his father and his half brothers could be so cruel as
the starred down their pompous noses at him while he lay bleeding wracked with pain
at their feet. It took a woman like Lady Helen Freymore, who had similar experiences,
the same emotional strife that Harry had endured.
I admit, that Harry Morant is one of the most tortured who perseveres
and never surrenders kind of character that has been my pleasure to what is
story and emotional growth unravel before my eyes.
